Ben Schmidt
Project Manager/ Lead Instructor/ USGS Boat Captain
Ben has spent a lifetime working and playing on the water, developing a deep expertise in paddling and river safety. Born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, he was classically trained in solo and marathon canoeing before expanding his skills into kayaking while studying at the University of Montana. His passion for paddling led him to own and operate Missoula’s original canoe and kayak shop, The Canoe Rack, where he fostered a strong paddling community.
After transitioning from retail, Ben became a River Ranger with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, dedicating his time to protecting and preserving the iconic Blackfoot River. With his extensive experience in river navigation, safety, and instruction, he is a valued member of the Whitewater Rescue Institute team.
